Powering the future: Science Centre Singapore Drives Renewable Energy Advocacy with Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix Singapore Series, Energised by Chevron
11 March 2024 –This year, Science Centre Singapore (SCS), in partnership with Horizon Educational and Chevron Singapore Pte Ltd (Chevron), will host the inaugural Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) Singapore series, energised by Chevron.
Organised by Horizon Educational, the programme allows students to design, engineer, and race small model remote-controlled fuel cell cars powered by hydrogen, developing STEM skills. The racing series is the only global school-based educational programme offering high school students an opportunity to understand the entire hydrogen value chain.
The programme is a unique opportunity for students in Singapore to engage in hands-on learning and enhance their awareness of sustainable energy. Students will be required to produce their very own hydrogen and store it in specialised cannisters before using it to power self-built model remote-controlled fuel cell cars. The programme exposes participants to the exploration and application of hydrogen fuel cell technology, while also encouraging transferable skills like teamwork, creativity, and innovation.
This focus on renewable energy underscores the Centre’s steadfast dedication to nurturing sustainable energy alternatives and raising awareness about the transformative potential of hydrogen fuel cells. This commitment aligns seamlessly with the Singapore Government's affirmation that "low-carbon hydrogen could supply up to half of Singapore's power needs by 2050 and play a key role in helping the Republic achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century.”
In preparation for the Singapore Finals event on 3rd and 4th August 2024, teachers will follow an innovative syllabus at their respective schools, with approximately three hours of activities per week based on training and resources provided to them during the recent teachers’ development session held at SCS.
The winning team from the Singapore Finals will go on to compete at the World Championship in Anaheim, California, USA from 9th to 12th September 2024.
Associate Professor Lim Tit Meng, Chief Executive, Science Centre Board, said, “Hosting the inaugural H2GP Singapore series is a momentous occasion for the Centre. In collaboration with
Horizon Educational and Chevron, we are thrilled to bring the dynamic fusion of STEM, teamwork, and problem-solving to the forefront. The competition, centred around designing and building hydrogen remote control cars from scratch, embodies skills that the Centre is passionately dedicated to nurturing. As we guide young minds toward becoming future innovators, we take pride in inspiring students to tinker and forge a path of endless possibilities together.”
“We created H2GP with one goal in mind: build a clean energy workforce capable of solving the most challenging problems facing humanity”, said Kamil Jelinek, CEO of Horizon Educational. “Today Chevron and Singapore Science Centre are helping us on that core mission, allowing us to reach more young people than we could have imagined when we started the programme seven years ago. As we expand throughout the Southeast Asia region, we look forward to working with communities, schools, teachers and parents in building a future that will make all of us proud.”
Andrew Mingst, General Manager, Hydrogen, Chevron New Energies said, “Working with our partners, Chevron is focused on exploring innovative wQays to keep STEM education exciting and fun for the next generation of problem solvers. By encouraging students to foster an interest in hydrogen through the H2GP Singapore series, we are not only nurturing and equipping them with the right skills to support a lower carbon world, but also empowering them to make a positive impact on the environment and society as a whole."
The H2GP Singapore series is open to all students aged 13 to 17, with fully sponsored admission fees for Ministry of Education (MOE) school teams. Registrations closed on 29th February 2024 and all 20 team slots have been filled by unique schools, totalling 96 student participants. The national race will take place on 3rd and 4th August 2024 and will be accompanied by a fiesta open to the public.
