Last weekend, at the National Science Teachers Association’s national conference in Los Angeles, we had an amazing H2AC finale with our partners at Toyota. The 20 Southern California schools who participated in the H2AC program have been working all year to design their very own hydrogen fuel cell radio-controlled car. Prior to the race day, students presented their car, along with a video presentation of their project experience to a panel of judges at the Toyota Museum in Torrance. The judges surveyed each car and determined the winner of the best designed car. This year, the winner of “Best Design” was Oakwood School. After the judging panel, the students had a networking dinner gala with executives from Toyota and Horizon and watched their presentation videos. On the day of the race, students competed in the 4 hour endurance race with the winner being Oakwood School, who completed 303 laps around the course.

Although Oakwood won the endurance challenge, there were multiple categories that each team competed in. Below are the winners of each category:

Endurance 1st place: Oakwood School

Endurance 2nd place: Edison High School

Endurance 3rd place: Mater Dei

Most Fuel Efficient: John C. Fremont High School

Most Innovative: El Toro High School

Best Pit Stop: JFK High School

Best Video Presentation: Mater Dei
