South Australia Holds State’s First H2GP Race
Last Friday 19 school teams from across South Australia travelled to Adelaide to take part in the region’s first ever H2GP race, with the team ‘Thunder Findon’ taking home the winner’s trophy and booking themselves a ticket to California in September to compete against the best teams from around the world. The expansion of the hydrogen education program comes after a successful pilot race in Queensland in 2023.
“The H2GP program is expanding rapidly across Australia and the pacific this year, with further events planned for Melbourne, Queensland, Perth and Singapore”, said Ales Rakovsky, Director of APAC at Horizon Educational. “The growth I’ve witnessed in students since joining the program is simply indescribable. They’ve learned how to use a hydrogen fuel cell in a real-world application. They’ve learned how to design and engineer a next-generation piece of equipment. And they’ve learned lifechanging teamwork and collaboration skills that will set them up well for future STEM careers”.
The student-led event was notable for hosting schools from across South Australia, including those from regional communities who are often underserved in STEM programs. The event was sponsored principally by the Government of South Australia in collaboration with SAH2-H and AGIG, ATCO, CSIRO, Fortescue, GFG Alliance and Total Energies H2.
